Obituary
EARL GORDON SMITH
April 9, 1907 - October 29, 1995
Earl was born in Oakland, California to Albert and Louvilla Smith. The eldest of their two sons, he survived his brother Albert, by two years. The family name, von Schmidt, was "Americanized" by his grandparents, and so, among the 12 names on the founding-membership charter of the San Anselmo, California First Presbyterian Church is Anna Marie (Grannie) Smith.
After high school he began his international banking career as a mail clerk at Crocker Bank in San Francisco. After working his way up to bank officer and head of the international accounting department, he retired after 47 years of service.
He met and married Hazel in 1939, with his jeweler father designing her wedding ring. With their two daughters, the couple resided in San Anselmo. Earl loved gardening, reading and walking, but his life was really centered around his family. In later years, he came to be a man loved by everyone who met him.
Most wonderful of all, four days before his 88th birthday this April, he received the God who loved him and had, over his last 12 years, been drawing his heart: Jesus became his personal Lord and Savior.
On October 29, at St. Vincent Hospital, while he was sleeping, he was ushered into His Glorious Presence.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Karin and Gail; niece, Val Thompson; cousin, Chick Noble; and second cousin, Larry Hoyt.
Thank you so much for your expressions of love and kindness to him over the years. We thank the Lord for his life.
