Obituary
Dorothy Jo (Little) Rice
July 12, 1928–April 7, 2006
Loving wife and mother, she will be missed by all who knew her. Dorothy was born in Omaha, Neb., to Alvin and Dorothy Little, the oldest of four children. She and her husband, Clayton, have been married 58 years. She is survived by sons, Clayton and David; daughter-in-law, Sheila; grandchildren: Julie, Brianna, Christina, Katie, and by her brother, Mary Claassen and brother-in-law, John Claassen, all of the Portland area; and sister-in-law, Jo Little of Brentwood, Calif. Her daughters, Mary and Naomi and grandson Ryan, have pre-deceased her.
She met the many challenges of raising two children with disabilities. She was an accomplished diabetic dietitian for her oldest daughter and a Braillist for her younger daughter. She also Brailled college level math texts for blind students.
She attended college at the University of Omaha and Hastings (Neb.) College, for two years before obtaining her degree of “motherhood.” She met Clayton at First Presbyterian Church in Omaha in 1946 after his discharge from the Navy. Six years later, in 1952, after Clayton graduated from seminary in Chicago, they moved to Oregon, Wisc., and from there to Portland in 1955.
During her time in Oregon, Dorothy was busy raising four children and being a loving wife. She not only learned to Braille, but also to “sign.” She spent much of her time leading Camp Fire Girls and Cub Scouts, as well as helping with church activities. She was a personal representative in several Portland branch banks, a career she enjoyed for over 19 years.
She was a ruling elder at First Presbyterian and Rose City Park Presbyterian Churches in Portland, and was president of the Presbyterial Presbyterian Women’s Association of Portland Presbytery. During her 10 years at Holladay Park Plaza she served as treasurer of the Resident Association and chair for the dining services and vespers committees. Her life was one of service to not only her “family,” but the community surrounding her. It can be said of Dorothy, “Hers was a life that mattered.”
A memorial service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1624 N.E. Hancock, at 7 p.m., April 12, 2006.
Memorials are requested be given to the “Holladay Park Plaza Resident Trust,” Raphael House of the Lefty Wings Center.
