Obituary

Ava J. Babcock, 75, ex-restaurant owner Ava Jean Babcock, 75, died Nov. 30, 2008, in Portland. Funeral services will be Monday, Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. at Donald Seil and Matthis Mortuary, 2323 N.E. Third Ave. Mrs. Babcock was born May 30, 1931, in Spencer, Neb., the eldest child of Ernest and Bessie Brown. She moved to Oreneco in 1944. On Aug. 23, 1959, she married Larry Babcock. Mrs. Babcock worked for Sprague-Babcock and the Oreneco Store. She and her husband also owned Larry's Burgers until retiring in 1985. After retiring, she worked at Grant Lumber, where she was the bookkeeper. She also did some real estate work. Mrs. Babcock was a charter member of the Swedish Ladies Chorus of Bethany Presbyterian Church for 51 years, having served as elder and Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed the Oregon coast, especially Depoe Bay, where she had vacationed every year since 1950. She also enjoyed family activities on holidays and special occasions. Survivors include her husband, Larry Babcock, Hillsboro; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kurt and Lee Babcock and Maurice Babcock; three daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Ron Mapes, Ala Mapes, Marshall and Jody Jones; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one granddaughter. Memorial contributions to church of choice are suggested. Fir Lawn Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
