Obituary

SUSAN MAGDALENA (NANNY) WALSH was born November 13, 1915 in Herndon, Kansas, the daughter of the late John P. Unger and Stella (Lang) Unger. She was the fourth of seven children and the last to die. Susan was raised and received her education in the Herndon, KS community. Following high school graduation and passing the County Teacher's Exam, she taught country school before getting married. Susan was united in marriage to David Edmon Walsh on September 5, 1935 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Herndon, Kansas. Following their marriage they resided in Herndon, until 1940 when they and their one year old son (John) moved to McMinnville, Oregon. After working at several odd jobs for a couple of years, they settled in Portland, Oregon, and worked in the shipyards during the war. Susan was a welder and worked the graveyard shift. In 1946, their daughter Mary was born and in 1948 they moved to Medford, Oregon. Susan finished one year of business college in 1956 and worked as an office administrator at an insurance firm to help put the kids through college. In 1964, they moved to Portland, Oregon where she continued her insurance career as an assistant underwriter until retiring in 1977. David and Susan bought a plot at Surfside Estates in Ocean Park, Washington in 1966. It was the first parcel sold at this development. They built a weekend cottage in 1967, the second house built at Surfside. In 1977, they moved permanently to the Surfside. Susan was very active in the Long Beach Community and St. Mary's Catholic Church in Seaview, Washington, and was a Lay Order of the Dominican with the Chapter at St. Rose Parish in Portland, OR. She was involved with many activities on the Long Beach Peninsula including the St. Mary's Altar Society, Meals-on-Wheels, Hospice, the Long Beach Garden Club and a Quilting Club were she made a number of beautiful quilts that are treasured by her family. She thoroughly loved her garden and clamming and was particularly noted for her beautiful garden and her many wonderful meals that included fried clams, ciopino, buttermilk biscuits, strudel and a whole host of delicious baked goods. She was greatly loved by her children and grandchildren and will be deeply missed. Susan was preceded in death by her husband, David, on October 16, 2000 at Astoria, Oregon, after celebrating over sixty-five years of marriage together. She was also preceded in death by her parents, John and Stella Unger, and by all six of her brothers and sisters. Survivors include her son John Walsh of Renton, WA, and daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Jim Salander, of Bethesda, Maryland. Also surviving are her two grandchildren, Abe Salander and Hannah Salander and grand daughter-in-law Orit Salander, and four great-grandchildren.
