Obituary
Todd Allen Schmit, 66, a resident of the Forest Grove community passed away on August 27, 2025 at the OHSU Medical Center in Portland, Oregon.
Todd was born on September 24, 1958 in Seattle, Washington. He was the oldest of four children born to Tom and Sheila (Nixon) Schmit. He was raised in the Seattle area until 1970 when his family moved to Lake Oswego. He attended Lake Oswego High School, graduating in 1976. Todd then enrolled at Southern Oregon State College and eventually attended Oregon State University.
He met his future wife, Kristi Walsh, while in college in Ashland, OR at SOSU. They soon began dating and, following a two-year courtship, they married on June 26, 1982 at St Matthew Catholic Church in Hillsboro, Oregon. They made their first home in Metzger before moving to Aloha. In 1990 they moved to Canby and finally settled in Forest Grove in 1996. They had three children together, Stephanie, Tyler, and Tommy.
Todd has worked in telecommunications all his career. He started as a cable installer but soon worked his way up into managing and supervisor/director positions. He worked for several companies, among which were North Willamette Telecom, Antec, Arris, and Commscope. Throughout the years he acquired a vast wealth of knowledge in the field of fiber optic cable and broadband technologies.
He was a die-hard Oregon State Beaver football fan. For thirty years he held season tickets. It was the highlight of his year to bring family and friends along for a day of tailgating and football. He enjoyed Beaver baseball too and was thrilled to attend the College World Series with his son, Tommy, in Omaha in 2017. He also enjoyed attending the OSU spring training games and tournaments in Phoenix.
He was a skilled woodworker, enjoyed home improvement projects, and could fix anything. Todd enjoyed a good joke, was a great storyteller, loved classic rock, and in his younger years, was a Grateful Deadhead attending many of their concerts. He enjoyed live events, especially sports and concerts, always gathering a group of family and friends to join him. He would never miss his kids’ games and performances and enjoyed helping coach their sports teams. Todd also enjoyed golfing, bowling, reading novels, playing board games, and challenging word puzzles that he played daily in competition with his grandson, Augustine and brother-in-law Bret.
Todd was known for his creative thinking “outside the box” for problem solving and solutions to just about anything. He had a keen mind and a sharp wit. Todd was a casual dresser, enjoyed a good whiskey or bourbon, and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Kristi and Todd enjoyed traveling to visit family and friends but always found time to visit the Oregon coast.
Todd was a devout Catholic and was a regular Reader and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Mass, and volunteered his time and his talents to his parish in countless ways. One of the highlights of his faith life was when his son, Tyler ,was ordained to the Holy Priesthood in 2021 at St. Michael’s Abbey with the Norbertine order in southern California.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his loving wife, Kristi, three children and their spouses: Stephanie and Brett Gilfillan of Phoenix, Arizona, Fr.
