Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Merle Vandewettering, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who left this world peacefully on February 22, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on March 1, 1935, in Forest Grove, Oregon, Merle was the cherished son of Henry and Catherine Vandewettering (Kempen).

Merle was a beacon of love, kindness, and dedication throughout his life. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Deanna Lorraine Vandewettering (Stark), his parents, and his siblings Cyril, Clarence, Vernon, Wayne, Elaine Vandewettering, Loretta Davis, and Germaine Drieling. His legacy of love and devotion is carried on by his six children: Brian and Mari Vandewettering of Portland, OR; Kelly and Michael Breeden of Dallas, OR; Russell and Poli Vandewettering of Dallas, OR; Brett and Lori Vandewettering of Philomath, OR; Tracey and Jeffery Stephens of McMinnville, OR; and Joseph and Frankee Gassner of Scio, OR. He is also survived by his 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, who will continue to cherish his memory and uphold the values he instilled in them.

A graduate of Visitation High School in Verboort, OR, Merle was a man of many talents. He served his country with honor in the United States Army from 1953 to 1954. Following his service, he embarked on a long and distinguished career as a machinist and tool and die maker at Tektronix, where he worked for over 30 years. His passion for precision and craftsmanship continued into his retirement as he dedicated himself to farming and restoring farm equipment—a pursuit he enjoyed tirelessly until the age of 86.
Merle’s love for the outdoors was evident in his hobbies. He found joy in camping, fishing and game bird hunting, often sharing these adventures with his children. A devoted father, he spent countless hours riding motorcycles with his children, taking them trail riding, and nurturing his daughter’s passion for horses through 4-H events and riding lessons. Merle’s unwavering support and dedication to his family were matched only by his deep faith and service to the community.

A devout Catholic, Merle was a member of the Knights of Columbus from the age of 18 until his passing. His commitment to his faith was demonstrated through his active participation in the church and his lifelong dedication to charitable giving. He was a man who understood the importance of giving back, and his generosity knew no bounds.
Merle’s life was a testament to the virtues of faith, family, and hard work. He taught his children the true meaning of these values, leaving them with a legacy of love and integrity. His warmth, wisdom, and gentle spirit touched the lives of all who knew him, and his memory will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Visitation Church, a place that held a special place in Merle’s heart.

A celebration of Merle’s remarkable life was held at Visitation Church, where friends and family gathered to honor a man who was truly one of a kind. As we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that Merle’s spirit lives on in the hearts of those he loved and those who loved him. His legacy is a beautiful reflection of a life well-lived, and he will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege to know him.
