Marjorie Eleanor Horter Van Dyke

Marjorie was born in Chicago, Illinois, the youngest of ten children. The family consisted of Estelle, Caroline, Cora (died age 2), Edna, Marian, Laura, Edith, Bertha, Robert and Marjorie.
At the turn of the century John Horter had established himself as manager of the La Salle Hotel at Broadway and Van Buren in downtown Chicago. The Columbian Exposition brought rail trends to Chicago and the hotel business was good.
The family lived in Englewood where a large stone home was built with electricity and a coal furnace. John greatly admired Teddy Roosevelt and with the zeal of the day hunted limited, fished, left for Alaska to hunt gold and traveled to the west by rail traversal and invest in property.
John was English and Dutch, Eleanor was English having come to Gardener Maine. Her uncle was Henry Knox who was active in 1750 Revolution with Geo. Washington, her father.
Marjorie attended Englewood H.S. graduated and enrolled in Michael Reese school of Nursing graduating in 1921. She became a public health nurse (VNA) serving the Stock Yards Dist. She also nursed during a typhoid epidemic in New Mexico printed nursed a friend with TB in New Mexico and returned to Chicago to marry Peter Van Dyke in 1925.
Subsequently, John Horter died of heart attack and most to his age.
