Obituary

John L. Mixon John L. Mixon, a minister and former professor at the School of Theology at Claremont, died August 5 in Portland, Oregon. He was 77. A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Mr. Mixon had resided in Portland for 18 months. He served as a professor of church social work at McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago from 1946 to 1952. He taught at Claremont from 1952 to 1960, and had served as a lecturer at the University of Southern California and Northwestern University as well. In 1930, Mr. Mixon and his wife, Rosalie, went on a 4-year term as missionaries with the Apache Indians in Mescalero, New Mexico. This was followed by study at the University of Chicago, Chicago Theological Seminary and the School of Social Work Administration where he became devoted to inner city work. Mr. Mixon organized the department of welfare in the Washington, DC Council of Churches in 1937, and he headed the program until 1941, when he went to Los Angeles to organize the church welfare bureau in the Church Federation. He coordinated the welfare work of 300 protestant churches and protestant welfare agencies in LA until 1946, during which time he also served as president of the LA chapter of the American Association of Social Workers and spoke at many state and national social work annual conferences. Mr. Mixon organized a summer program for neglected children of defense workers during World War II, and served on city as well as state agencies.
