Obituary

Melvin Joseph Finegan, 91, a resident of the Hillsboro community passed away on September 17, 2025 at his home.

Melvin was born on December 28, 1933 in Hillsboro, OR He was the second of two children born to Elvin and Clara (Reh) Finegan. He was raised in Hillsboro and spent most of his childhood on his grandfather’s farm. He attended Hillsboro High School graduating with the Class of 1951. Farming was his calling beginning with his Grandpa Joseph Finegan and high school Future Farmers of America. He produced and sold his first farm crops at age 15 

After high school, he served his country in the US Army. He met his future wife, Marie Taghon, while at a fundraiser at St Alexander’s Catholic Church in Cornelius. They married on April 12, 1969, at St Anthony’s Catholic Church in Forest Grove, OR. They made their home in Cornelius where they  raised their family. In 2004 they moved to their present home on the family farm in Hillsboro, OR.

Melvin was a farmer all his life, growing his farming operation into what it is today, leaving the legacy to his children. 

When Melvin wasn’t farming, he was doing something that had to do with farming. He volunteered at his local farm co-op’s and Visitation Catholic Church. As well as Melvin was elected to the Cornelius Rural Fire District Board. Melvin and Marie enjoyed traveling abroad, visiting cities and farms all over the world. They also toured across the United States visiting various historical sites and farms. Melvin enjoyed socializing with his long time friends and his family. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren whom he loved dearly. He attended many of their sports and interests as his farm life slowed down.He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Eleanor Smith.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marie, six children and their spouses, Catherine and Ken Woodbury of Severn, Maryland, Melva and Rex Calloway of Quincy, Washington, Joseph Finegan of Cornelius, Timothy and Katie Finegan of Sebastopol, California, Celeste and Aaron Harding of Redmond, Oregon, Kenneth and Angela Finegan of North Plains, sixteen grandchildren, Sean, Marshall, Justin, Jackson, Thomas, Andrew, Everett, Aiden, Rileigh, Trenten, Lauren, Owen, Kara, Henry, George and Elizabeth, two great grandchildren Logan and Anya, nephew Greg Smith, and niece, Susan Heenk.
