Obituary

James Donald Boogaard, 76, a resident of the Cornelius community died Saturday evening, January 19, 2013 at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 25, 2013 at the Visitation Catholic Church; 4285 NW Visitation Rd in Verboort, OR.

A Memorial Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m.

Rite of Christian burial and entombment will follow the Mass held at the Visitation Catholic Cemetery in Verboort, OR.

Family and friends are invited to attend a reception at the parish hall following the burial.

James was born on January 7, 1937 in Perham, MN. He was one of nine children born to Cornelius and Alfreda (DeClerck) Boogaard. He was raised and received his early education in Butler and moved with his family to Verboort in 1952. James attended Verboort School and graduated from Verboort High School Class of 1955.

He enlisted into the US Army and served his country in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1958 as a Private First Class.

He was united in marriage to Clarene Edgett on January 28, 1961. Following their marriage they made their home in the Hillsboro area, where they had four children. They divorced in 1969. James then started to travel abroad due to his job and met his second wife, Vivienne Johnson while assigned in Australia. They were married on April 1, 1975. Following their marriage they followed James' work and had made their home in South Africa, until 1977, then moved to Texas for a year, then moved to Oregon in 1978. In 1983 they moved to the Central Coast of New South Wales in Australia. In 1998 they moved again to Cornelius were they have lived since.

James had worked for Tektronix and Singer Business Machines as a software engineer and systems analyst. Later, he became an owner of a general hardware store in Australia. James then became a teacher at the Australia TAFE National Community College where he taught for 8 years. He retired after moving to Cornelius.

He enjoyed the outdoors, caring for animals, and playing the stock market. He liked to fix and build things which often included him reusing previously discarded building material. He listened to talk radio and followed the latest in political news. He was an avid reader, liked traveling with his wife and family, and enjoyed family get-togethers. James was very social and was very quick to make friends with anyone.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Virginia

He is survived by his loving wife, Vivienne, four children and their spouses: Renee Demke of Hillsboro, OR; Jeffrey and Tanya Boogaard of Lovettsville, VA; Michael and Ruth Ellen Boogaard of Finley, WA; Nancy Boogaard of Lincoln City, OR; seven siblings: Sister Janice Boogaard, Beverly Evers, Darlene Moore, Margie Vandehey, Jerry Boogaard, Joyce Hunter, Ronald Boogaard and nine grandchildren.

The family suggests donations in James name to Banks American Legion, Post 90, Youth Program.
