Obituary

Warren Leonard Hopson, 75, a resident of the Hillsboro community, passed away on April 1, 2026, at his home. He was born in November 1950, in Myrtle Point, Oregon, the fourth of five children born to Miles and Katherine (Napier) Hopson. Warren was raised in Bandon, Oregon, where he developed a love for the outdoors and a strong sense of community. In high school, he was active in the Rod and Gun Club and lettered in basketball and track, excelling as an award-winning pole vaulter. He graduated from Bandon High School with the Class of 1969. Warren continued his education at Southern Oregon College in Ashland. He was a member of the track team as a pole vaulter and enjoyed skiing on Mt. Ashland. He graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree in criminology and police science. While in Ashland, Warren met the love of his life, Janet Barger. They were married in 1972 in St. Helens, Oregon. Together they built a life centered on family, service, and shared adventure, eventually settling in Hillsboro, Oregon. They raised three children: Sarah, Katherine, and Samuel. Warren dedicated his life to law enforcement. He began his career with the Klamath Falls City Police Department and later worked for the Klamath County Sheriff’s Department before joining the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. During his distinguished 30-year career, he rose to the rank of Sergeant and served on the K-9 unit, TNT (SWAT) team, and as a firearms instructor at the department’s gun range. He was honored with two Medals of Valor—one in 1990 from the Oregon State Sheriff’s Association and another in 1991 from the Oregon Peace Officers Association. After retiring in 2003, he continued to serve his community as a part-time investigator for another ten years. Outside of his career, Warren lived life with passion and purpose. He was a master marksman and a 3rd-degree black belt in Taekwon-do. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, crabbing, and clam digging, especially along the Oregon coast. Warren was also a talented woodworker and craftsman, building furniture, a barn, and generously helping friends and family with countless projects. He enjoyed working on his property in Goldendale, Washington, running his sawmill, and even roller skating. Warren was a longtime member of Tualatin Plains Presbyterian Church (Old Scotch Church), where he served as a Deacon and as a member of the Building and Grounds Commission Warren is survived by his beloved wife, Janet; his children and their spouses, Sarah and Alieu, Katherine and Jonathan, and Samuel and Samantha; his grandchildren, William, Soma, and Isaiah; his brother, Gary; his sister, Elaine; and his beloved dogs Storm and Jett. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Warren’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
