Shirley Horn
Obituary
Shirley Lorraine Pfeifer Clooten, 96, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2026, in Hillsboro, Oregon with her daughter Shena and Shena’s husband Harvey by her side.
Shirley was born on July 29, 1929, in Amidon Slope, North Dakota. She was the youngest of five children born to John Edward and Grace Alvira Barteau Pfeifer. Shirley lived a life marked by resilience, devotion, and unwavering love for her family.
She graduated from Bismarck High School and later from Western Business College in 1977. It was during these early years that she met Richard Joseph “Bunny” Clooten, her husband of 20 years and the love of her life. Shirley often spoke fondly of Bunny, cherishing the memories they had together.
A devoted mother to ten children—one from her second marriage and one adopted—Shirley was the cornerstone of her family. She provided steadfast financial, emotional, and physical support through every season of life. Her dedication was evident in countless ways: putting Christmas gifts on layaway and paying throughout the year; accompanying her children to pick berries and vegetables to ensure they had school clothes and supplies; preparing three home-cooked meals daily; and lovingly packing school lunches. Her scalloped oysters became a cherished family favorite.
Shirley’s talents extended far beyond the kitchen. A gifted seamstress with an eye for beauty, she lovingly made all of her daughter Shena’s party and dance dresses and even crafted a Barney costume for her grandson, Alexander. Her creativity showed up everywhere—she was an avid gardener who delighted in working in the yard alongside her children and grandchildren. She could knit, crochet, embroider, draw, paint, and play the guitar. Shirley sang like a bird, sharing her voice at many events, including her granddaughter’s wedding. She also had a natural gift for sales and a sharp mind, and she took pride in completing a crossword puzzle every single day.
After raising her children, Shirley began a new chapter with remarkable success. She received on-the-job training as a legal secretary with Washington County Community Corrections, then worked for Garland, Karpstein, Boyer, and Verhulst Law Firm. She later worked seasonally for the State Forestry Department.
After passing the State Civil Service Test, Shirley was hired by the Department of Commerce, Insurance Division, where she passed the Insurance Agent’s Test. When the office transferred to Salem, she moved on to work for SAIF Corporation. She was later called back to the State Department of Commerce and hired as Executive Secretary for the Savings and Loan Supervisor, remaining in that position until the office was again transferred to Salem in 1984.
Shirley then passed the Federal Civil Service Test and was hired by the Internal Revenue Service. She worked in the Public Affairs Department and was later promoted to a Tax Examiner position. She held this role until taking early retirement in 1991 to care for her ailing husband and their livestock. Her professional journey reflected the adaptability, determination, and work ethic that defined her life.
Shirley’s legacy is one of enduring love, tireless work ethic, and quiet strength. As a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend, she touched many lives with grace and generosity. As her final wishes, she requested to be buried in a wedding dress as she never had a formal wedding, and asked that everyone be told that she loved them.
She was preceded in death by her children: Blane Clooten, Monte Clooten, and Tracey Clooten Mathre.
She is survived by her children: Shena Clooten-Rose and husband Harvey, David Clooten and wife Abby and their beautiful daughter Sophia, Barth Clooten and wife Debbie, Richard Clooten and wife Valada, Shelley Painter and husband Lonnie, Paula Clooten and her friend Randy, and Desiree Clooten and her friend David. Shirley is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom she deeply loved and cherished.
May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
